Imaginary Sounds Mix 21: Killing in Style: Works from the Great Italian Film Composers

Mix #21 is a guest mix, and it's really exciting; and important to why we do this. I probably would never had checked out this genre of music if it hadn't been for this mix, and I ended up loving it. And that's what this blog is all about, finding new music, and finding new loves, that you may have never heard otherwise. Or at least that's what we want to happen. Enjoy everyone.

Killing in Style is our very first guest compilation with, hopefully, many more to come. This one is from naguine of the blog i don't care about sleep.  They write:

Killing in Style is a hypnotic, erotic collection of my favourite Italian film soundtrack composers; including Ennio Morricone, Bruno Nicolai, and Piero Piccioni. The mix is largely made up of tracks from giallo scores, which tend to be the most soothing and pleasant to listen to, but also highly expressive at times and fairly experimental, sometimes orchestral and sometimes sparse.

Ennio Morricone is arguably the most important and well-known of the composers here. He did scores for Italian crime-fiction or mystery films (called Giallo films) with Dario Argento, including the soundtracks for the Animal Trilogy. He is even more famous for the scores he wrote for spaghetti westerns, particularly those he did with Sergio Leone. Bruno Nicolai conducted for and sometimes co-wrote scores with Morricone, and there are a couple of his solo works featured here. Piero ‘Perverted’ Piccioni, lawyer-turned-composer, is infamous not just for his immense talent but also because of a lewd criminal incident that caused quite a bit of controversy for the composer. A few tracks from Berto Pisano’s infamous Interrabang score have made it on here, as well as one from Garvarentz’s Sapho score and one from Trovaioli’s L’Arcidiavolo score (Beelzebub).
This is truly a great mix with some incredibly beautiful music. It's the kind of stuff that you never think about getting into that turns out to be a genuine pleasant surprise. Please check out the mix, and make a visit over to their blog!
