In 1974, punk in New York was showing it's true form. The following at CBGB's started in earnest, Patti Smith recorded her first single, the Ramones played their first show, and a band named Talking Heads formed who would see punk music come in at full blast and sputter off several years later.
That's not to say the Talking Heads were really punk. I mean, they were poor art students who played simple, "nervous", rock music. I guess by default it was punk, but it was so much more than that. They weren't angry, or anti-establishment. They were just goofy. While working with producer Brian Eno, the Talking Heads artier side came out more. The album Fear of Music saw the introduction of african polyrhythmic percussion, as well as some poppier sounds. The subsequent album, Remain in Light came to be their most challenging, with Eno and Byrne experimenting with ambient music, glitching electronic sounds, and more african rhythms. Their 4th album, Speaking in Tongues, saw the band taking their musical innovations and refining them into one of the best pop albums ever made, and a key album in the New Wave movement of the '80s. Going on to release 5 more albums and a live documentary, the Talking Heads continued to walk the fine line between pop and art. Very seldom is there ever a band who can garner such great critical acclaim and still generate such a huge following and several pop hits. This mix is an attempt to collect all the most important songs indicative of their style and innovations taken from their entire discography.
