Desert Hymns

Good friend, collaborator, and fellow blogger; Jacob Dixon has just recently started a daily updated tumblr featuring underrated, cherished, and just plain great albums. The albums aren't posted to download for free, it's more personal than that. Back story, dissection, and personal value are the highlights at Desert Hymns.

You can start your journey there by checking out a guest post that yours truly did (of which hopefully I'll be doing often) on the post-hardcore band Gospel and their debut album. Check that out HERE and follow Desert Hymns on your tumblr.

Below is the Gospel track Paper Tiger to stream. Read the Desert Hymns post at the same time for a truly psychedelic effect. (Not really. No psychedelic effects. That was a lie.)

Don't Call It A Comeback (Or Do)

Photobucket

So 2011; It sucked. I just wanted to get that off my chest.

And I didn't post a top 25 albums or whatever. Pitchfork posted theirs though, right? Well just take their list, and mix 'em all around.

Literally, print them out on cards and mix them up. Then add Jenny Hval's Viscera at #1.

Oh, and leave out that War on Drugs album. Blech.

But anyway, this blog is back and there'll be posts and compilations and all that stuff regularly again.

Also, subscribe to the damn thing too. Right under that pretentious "what we're about" section, there to the right, there's a "subscribe via email" box. Put your email address there, hit enter, BAM.

Also, further down you can subscribe via RSS. Do this and check out Feedly, it's a great RSS reader where you can subscribe to blogs about Cats, the television show Las Vegas, Thom Yorke tumblrs, or other things that interest you. So yeah. Whatever.

Also, I'm working on re-uploading all compilations to Mediafire. All of them are currently down as of right now. If someone has a better recommendation for a hosting site; please, let me know.

Checking In/Buke & Gass

Things have been incredibly slow around Imaginary Sounds in the last few weeks, and I apologize. I've started a new job and it's taken up so much of my time that I barely get to listen to music as much as I used to much less make posts.

I refuse to even entertain the idea of Imaginary Sounds going anywhere but continually forward, but you'll have to bear with me a bit while I adjust to a new schedule and lack of time. I've got lots of mixes in the works still.

Enough excuses, lets talk about music.

I want to profile a band who went criminally underrated and unknown in 2010, and that is the two-piece known as Buke & Gass.
This year Buke & Gass have been busy touring with tUnE-yArDs and Lou Reed, and working on the follow up to their excellent debut album Riposte.

Buke & Gass - Medicina

If you're like me the first thing you thought about the band is "Wow, what a weird name." It is, but it has a lot to do with their aesthetic. See, Buke & Gass create and their own instruments by modifying other instruments. Vocalist Arone Dyer plays the buke, a self-modified six string baritone ukelele and Mr.  Aron Sanchez plays the gass, a guitar/bass hybrid. B&Gs self styled gear and DIY attitude creates for them an unmistakable timbre and style somewhere between raw and ethereal.
If you're not yet convinced then here's a 17 minute intimate concert by the duo put together by NPR that truly showcases the bold power of their songs, and after that a full stream of the amazing Riposte LP on bandcamp.

Click the album cover to listen to Riposte in full.

Season's Greetings

Tomorrow night at midnight we'll be starting our countdown to Christmas. Every night at midnight I'll be posting a new Christmas song from the alternative music sphere. Hopefully that will get you in the Christmas spirit and keep you guys around for your Christmas gift on the 25th.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

News and Videos!

Hey guys, it's been a little bit.

Mixes are still being made. Speaking of: There's a Rockabilly mix coming up next week! Yay.

School is in full swing and I've only got two semesters to go so i'm sticking to getting this done right.

Here's a couple new singles and videos released recently that i've been addicted to:

Parenthetical Girls - Young Throats (dir. A Nice Idea Every Day)

You can preorder the new Parenthetical Girls EP Priviledge Part II at their site now.

Jon Hopkins - Vessel (Four Tet Remix) (dir. Bison)

One of the most beautiful music videos i've ever seen and an incredible remix. I definitely suggest watching in HD.

Calling for Guest Compilations

As usual, Imaginary Sounds is looking for ideas for future mixes, or for ideas on how to improve the site. But we are also looking for people who have a specific interest (obsession would be even better) in a genre or theme to do a guest curated mix.

This would be an awesome way to get your favorite bands, your ideas, and your name out there and also add content to the site. If you enjoy it enough we might even ask you to stick around and do future mixes.

If you're at all interested, send an email over to wearenoneofus@gmail.com letting me know what you're interested in doing.

Also, more music videos on the way!
