What War is That?

The moment I heard the swirling hypnotic music of Colin Stetson I felt lost and bewildered in the best way possible. What he creates are not so much songs, but periods of time and mood. Using only his bass saxophone, his voice, and a plethora of very particularly placed microphones (there are no overdubs here, and all are done in a single take, folks) Stetson creates these organic and windy motifs that sound like nothing you've ever heard: ambient, yes, but engaging as well; the click-clack and wind of the tracks pull you in for some revelatory statement that has been on the tip of your tongue your whole life. I'm not all that familiar with where the saxophone is going in the 21st century, but I know that this man must be somewhere in the forefront of it's evolution in modern music.

You can listen to The Stars in His Head (Dark Lights Remix) and Fear of the Unknown and the Blazing Sun, both tracks from his new album New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges below.
